title Characterization of Ytterbium-doped fluoride crystals
for optical refrigeration experiments

abstract
Optical refrigeration of solids is a process in which the temperature of a material
decreases when pumped with a suitable laser source. This phenomenon exploits
the fraction of fluorescence light with mean energy higher than the pump. Energy
difference is subtracted from the thermal excitations of the solid, which in results
cools down. During the thesis work, several Ytterbium-doped fluoride crystals were
grown to assess their cooling performances. Spectroscopic and cooling measure-
ments were performed in custom-made setups. Influence of foreign contaminants
on the cooling efficiencies was studied with optical and elemental analyses.
